Microphone Not Working in Your Browser?
A browser microphone usually fails because site permission is blocked, the wrong input is selected, another app holds the device, or the operating system has disabled access. Start by checking whether the browser can open an input and whether the level meter moves when you speak.
Open the Microphone Test →Common causes
Muted hardware controls, a disconnected USB or Bluetooth device, an incorrect default input, browser permission set to Block, operating-system privacy restrictions, and another call or recording app using the microphone are the most common causes. A device can also appear by name while delivering no meaningful signal.
- Muted hardware controls
- a disconnected USB or Bluetooth device
- an incorrect default input
- browser permission set to Block
- operating-system privacy restrictions
- and another call or recording app using the microphone are the most common causes. A device can also appear by name while delivering no meaningful signal.
Try these checks in order
- Step 1. Reload the page, confirm the physical mute switch, reconnect the device, close calling or recording apps, allow microphone access for this site, select the intended input.
- Step 2. speak at a normal distance. If the meter remains flat, test another browser and another input port before assuming hardware failure..
Change one thing at a time and repeat the browser test. That makes it easier to identify which permission, connection, or routing change actually restored the signal.
What the browser test can confirm
The test can confirm that the browser opened an audio input, show the selected track settings, and indicate whether a signal rises above background noise. A short local recording can help you hear the result. It cannot certify microphone hardware, drivers, conferencing-app configuration, or call quality.
Limits and privacy
Microphone permission is controlled by your browser and operating system. Test audio and temporary recordings stay in the page and are not uploaded by the Device Check test engine.
A successful browser result means the expected event or stream reached this page during the test. It is useful evidence, but it is not a repair, calibration, warranty, or manufacturer certification.
